The Galiceno originated in the Spanish province of Galacia in Mexico. The Spanish brought the Galiceno from Haiti (Hispaniola) in the 16th century. The Galiceno were most likely influenced by the strong Sorraia and Garranos of the Iberian Peninsula. The Galiceno has the character and movement of a small horse but is referred to as a pony. The average height of this pony is 14hh. The modern Galiceno retains the smooth-gait, a swift running walk, which was much prized in the 16th century by the Europeans. The Galiceno was brought to the United States of America in the 1950s and is still bred there today as well as in Mexico. These ponies are versatile, obedient, and smart. The Galiceno is used for riding and harness work in Mexico and are also popular for ranch work and competitions. They are quick, responsive, and agile. The Galiceno is a popular and suitable pony for young riders.
