The Falabella originated from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Falabella family developed the Falabella miniature horses. These miniature horses were selectively bred and had a breeding policy that was perfected by the Falabella family at the Recreo de Roca Ranch. To obtain these very miniature horses they started crossbreeding with the smallest Shetland ponies and a very small Thoroughbred stallion. The Falabella family then took the smallest animals of these crossings and mated them with each other and obtained a dwarfism by intensive inbreeding. With this inbreeding to reduce the size often came the loss of conformational vigor and an offspring being disproportionate, with large heads and weak quarters. The goal of the breeders were to produce a near-perfect miniature horse that is equal in proportions and character. The Falabella looks like a smaller version of the Shetland pony but has better legs. The best Falabella often retain the better points of the Shetland. These tiny horses are friendly and good-tempered and great as pets. The ideal height of the Falabella is about 30 inches at the withers. Today the Falabella is probably the best-known miniature horse and are widely found throughout the world and particularly in the US.
