The Faeroes Ponies originated from the Faeroe Islands and are one of the purest and oldest breeds known, due in part to the islands isolated conditions. These Islands are in the North Atlantic located between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. The Faeroe Islands consist of 540 square miles of 17 islands, many islets, and reefs. Around 200 A.D. small horses that resemble the Faeroes Ponies were brought to Europe from Asia and then to the islands by the Scandinavian and early Celtic settlers. At the time of the formation of the Association for Faeroes Ponies there was only 5 ponies left in existence, by 1988 with the efforts to preserve the Faeroes Ponies that number had improved to 27 ponies. A stud book was created and all of these ponies were tested and evaluated and approving 24 of these ponies for breeding purposes. The Faeroes Pony is also known as: Faeroe Island Horse, Foroyar, Foeroerne, Foroyski Hesturin
