The English Riding Pony also known as the British Riding Pony originated in the mid-Wales area. The local stock was influential in the earlier years. This pony was developed by a group of British breeders with crossbreeding from a combination of Arabian, Thoroughbred, and British pony blood (mostly Welsh and a little Dartmoor). The English Riding Pony is considered to be superior in terms of proportion and quality. These ponies have retained all the pony characteristics; yet have a Thoroughbred proportion, movement, and form. The English Riding Pony became increasingly popular in the 1940s. These ponies perform in the show ring depending on their height in three divisions; 12.2, 13.2, 14.2. The English Riding Pony is also great on jumping courses as the Working Hunter Pony or a Hunter Show Pony. The English Riding Pony stands on average 12.2 to 14.2 hh. Today there are studs located throughout the UK and Ireland.
