The Dutch Warmblood is a cross between two of Holland's indigenous breeds - the Gelderlander and the stockier Groningen. In the last century the breeders of the Gelder province created the Gelderlander. The Groningen originated in Friesian and Oldenburg. This horse had strong rear quarters but the front was not as good as the Gelderlander. The Gelderland and the Groningen were mixed to create the Dutch Warmblood. Thoroughbred blood was also used to improve the breed by getting rid of the carriage-horse action and the long, harness back. The Dutch Warmblood was also mixed with French and German warmbloods as well to adjust temperamental deviations. Today these horses are used for competition in dressage in jumping. There have been many notable performers, such as show jumper Calypso as well as Marius, the sire of the enigmatic Milton and the dressage horse, Dutch Courage.
