The Donkey is also known as the Burro, Jackass, or Jennet. The Egyptians probably domesticated the Donkey around 4000 B.C. The Egyptians used them for riding, pulling carts and wagons, and as pack animals much like we do today. Donkeys come in a variety of sizes from the miniatures that are less than 36 inches to the Mammoth Jackstock that are 14 hh and up. The Donkey is easier to teach and tame than the majority of horses and are very surefooted which makes them better on mountain paths. The Donkey is very laid back and self-preserving in nature. They are very friendly and can perform all the gaits horses or mules do. Donkeys can also make wonderful guard animals. The right donkey could take care of an entire herd of cattle, sheep or goats with their natural aversion to predators and wild canines. Donkeys and dogs typically don't mix, although they can be trained to leave them alone.
