The Connemara Pony is native to Ireland and takes its name from the wild part of Ireland to the west of Loughs Corrib and Mask. A multitude of breeds have been crossed to improve the Connemara Pony. The Irish Hobby, a cross between Barbs and Spanish Horses, of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is the ancestor of the hardy and agile Connemara. In the nineteenth century during government breeding programs a number of different breeds were crossbred to check the deterioration of the native stock. These breeds included Arabian, Welsh Cobs, Thoroughbreds, Roadsters, or Hackneys and even the Clydesdales. The results of the mixture of breeds have upgraded the Connemara to the excellence it has attained today. This pony is sturdy, smart, fast, sensible and an extraordinary jumper. In 1923 the Connemara Pony Breeders' Society was established and in 1947 the English Connemara Society was formed.
