The Campolina originated in Brazil. This breed was originally developed from Andalusian and Spanish Barb horses in the 1870s. Cassiano Campolina developed this breed of horses by selection and genetic improvement. Some of the breeds that have been used in the development of the Campolina are Anglo-Norman, Clydesdale, Holsteiner, and the American Saddle Horse. The Mangalargo breed was also used to enhance the refinement of the Campolina. The studbook was closed in 1934 to prevent anymore outside breeding of the Campolina.
