The Basotho Pony was developed after 1825 from the Cape Horse. The Basotho Pony is found in Lesotho in South Africa. The pony is used for just for riding purposes and cattle do draft work in Lesotho. Due to exportation and crossbreeding to Arabians and Thoroughbreds by the early 20th century the breed has almost disappeared. Eventually a breed society was formed and set about to revive the breed. The Basotho Pony can walk, trot, canter, triple and pace. The Basotho Pony was also used to help develop the Nooitgedacht Pony.
