The Australian Pony emerged from a melting pot of pony breeds that were imported to Australia by the 1920s. As early as 1788 horses and ponies were imported with the arrival of immigrants to their new country and increased after 1803. Ponies from Timor, the islands of Sumba and Sumbawa and the distinguished Sandalwood pony were imported. Early in the 19th century the Arabians and a few Thoroughbreds were brought in upgrading the stock. During the same time they brought over some Exmoor, Shetlands, New Forest, Highland, Irish Connemara, and Hackneys. However the greatest influence came from the Welsh Mountain Pony and from this mixture came the Australian Pony. Today the Australian Ponies main influences are the Welsh Mountain Pony and Arabian with a little influence from the Thoroughbred. The Australian Pony is a distinguished show pony standing between 12 and 14hh. These ponies perform well under harness and make for an exceptionally smooth ride in saddle for small adults or children.
