The Andalusian, formerly for centuries known as the Spanish Horse, is from old Spain, in Jerez de la Frontera, Cordoba, and Seville. The exact origins of the breeds existence could not be established, however, it is thought that between 711 A.D. and 1492 the Andalusian was evolved from crossbreeding between the native stock of the Sorraia Pony and the North African Barb horses.During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in an effort to create bigger horses this breed was nearly ruined. Through the selective breeding and the perseverance from the Carthusian monks to conserve the purity of the Andalusian the best lines today trace to those original Carthusian horses. Today Andalusians are a favorite of Spanish bullfighters and herders.
