The American Saddlebred, formerly called the Kentucky Saddler, was a useful and elegant horse evolving in the southern states of America in the nineteenth century. This horse could work as an intelligent carriage horse or perform a multitude of farm tasks such as carrying, hauling and working long hours. The American Saddlebred was evolved from the Canadian Pacer and the Narragansett Pacer. Morgan and Thoroughbred blood were also introduced to create a unique, remarkable horse. The modern Saddlebred, either three or five-gaited, is regarded as a smart show horse. This horse is used for pleasure, trail riding, can work cattle and compete in jumping and dressage. Regardless of its diversity, however, the American Saddlebred Association still describes it as "America's most misunderstood breed" because of the artificial way in which it is created and its show ring representation of a cropped, high-set tail, over-long hooves and the questionable training aids. Also known as the Saddlebred
